I posted the other day that I was experimenting with the Writing Into the Dark method for a new novel, and I wanted to give a quick update on how it’s going.
June 9
Start novel with little more than a character and a vague idea.
850 words
June 10
VERY rough day at work, so I took the night off.
June 11
I re-read and edited what I had so far. Continued writing and reached 1173 words.
June 12
Did a lot less editing of previous day’s work, more new writing. 2027 words.
June 13
This was another night that was primarily writing and light on editing. 3923 words.
June 14
I did a lot of looping back to edit and clean up this day. 4119 words.
June 15
Friday nights are my lazy night. No writing.
June 16
I did some writing and reached 4982 words. I also made some changes to the blog and got a mailing list set up with MailChimp. Yay me! Scroll down to subscribe while you’re here?
June 17
I did multiple writing sessions today and reached 8087 words.
My process:
I tend to write in multiple shorter sessions. I usually write between 400-900 words in a sitting, and then I need a breather. I then back up a little; sometimes a few hundred words, sometimes just a couple paragraphs. I read and make edits to that and then that gets me in the flow again to continue writing.
I write best if it’s quiet, and my husband is a great guy who doesn’t mind that, so I write in the living room with him. If he really wants to have the TV on, I throw on a pair of headphones.
Music distracts me while I write, so I listen to other background noise. I highly recommend Noisli for this. You can mix a variety of noises (summer night + fire is one of my favorites), and you can even set a timer. Check it out.
